My name is Ian Lee. For the last five-and-a-half years, I have worked as a union organizer and successfully organized thousands of workers to form unions at their workplaces. Organizing is not theoretical for me. In these past five-and-a-half years -- and particularly through this pandemic -- I’ve seen how the working class in this country has been abandoned as corporate billionaires continue to get richer and more powerful off their workers’ labor. For example, I spent the majority of last year organizing a Gig Workers’ Union (Uber, Lyft, Doordash, etc.), and I watched in horror when, at the beginning of the pandemic, Lyft not only continued to pay their drivers subminimum wages, but began to charge their drivers for the PPE they needed to do their jobs safely.

At the same time I was inspired by those very drivers -- thousands of them -- as they came together to build power through a statewide organization, which continues growing to this day. In 2016, when thousands of Walmart workers and fast food workers built a movement and took their strikes to the streets, we were able to win a statewide $15/hr minimum wage. So we know that when we organize, we can win.

We need Medicare for All, a Green New Deal, and a Canceling of Student Debt. And we need to support the Movement for Black Lives. That’s the California Democratic Party I want to see.
